As of Tuesday, June 29, Civil Defense officials reported that 57 people had succumbed to storms lashing Brazil’s northeastern region over the past two weeks. Twenty of the fatalities occurred in Pernambuco state and 37 in neighboring Alagoas, where 69 people are still missing following floods and landslides.
